Find a place to volunteer in the Bay Area.
The nine Bay Area counties hold hundreds of organizations that take volunteers, and almost none of them are listed in one place. Each organization here was checked against what it publishes about itself. Search by the kind of work, the county, or the commitment you can make.
Browse the directory Download the guide About this guide268 organizations across the nine Bay Area counties, sorted into 16 kinds of work. Every figure comes from what each organization publishes. Where a detail is not published, this guide says so rather than filling the gap, because those are the questions worth leading with on the phone. This information is up to date as of 22 September 2026.
About this guide
I put this together after looking for somewhere to volunteer and running into the same wall every time. The lists I found were years out of date, and the ones that were current never said what an organization actually asks of you before you show up.
Every organization here was checked against its own published pages in September 2026. Nothing came from an aggregator, and nothing was filled in by guesswork.
How it was checked
Where the figures come from
Each organization's own website. Age rules, time commitments and fees appear as the organization states them, not as a summary of them.
What “Not stated” means
The organization does not publish that detail. Nothing has been invented to fill the space, which makes those the questions worth leading with when you call.
What the filters are, and are not
Youth, low commitment and takes groups are read from what each organization publishes about age, time and groups. Fees are listed only where an organization publishes one, so an entry without a fee is not a promise that it is free.
What goes stale
Volunteer lists go out of date quietly. Both documents carry a page of organizations that older Bay Area lists still name, with what actually happened to them. It is worth checking any existing list against it.
